May 5, 2009 / The Sher Vancouver Executive voted to change the Facebook group name to: "Sher Vancouver! LGBT South Asians & Friends." Sher Vancouver is now officially a South Asian group due to its growing diversity. The Yahoo group remains a Punjabi division of Sher Vancouver. The Facebook group has grown to close to 150 members. The Yahoo group has grown to over 80 members.
April 13, 2009 / January Marie Lapuz became the first transgendered person to hold an Executive position with Sher Vancouver as one of two Social Coordinators.
April 8, 2009 / The Sher Vancouver DOSTI project launched which is designed to combat homophobia in schools and the community.
January 13, 2009 / Ash Harpal Brar, the Sher Vancouver Acting Moderator and Pride Coordinator, profiled in "Xtra West," Vancouver's LGBT newspaper in an article about "The next generation of leaders."
January 2009 / Amar Sangha's coming out story profiled in Trikone Magazine. This magazine is based out of San Francisco and Trikone is one of the largest LGBT South Asian organizations in the world.
October 23-26, 2008 / Sher Vancouver participated in a panel discussion on "Embracing a Multicultural Pride" as part of the Interpride Conference hosted by the Vancouver Pride Society.
October 12, 2008 / Parveen Khtaria, the Sher Vancouver Social Coordinator, delivered a speech on behalf of Sher Vancouver Founder Amar Sangha, at the "Join Hands for Justice Rally" in Vancouver. This rally was in response to a gay bashing.
October 1, 2008 / Sher Vancouver became an affiliated agency of the Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society. PICS Head Office is based in Surrey, B.C. and provides a lot of services to the South Asian and immigrant communities.
September 30, 2008 / Jag Nagra, the Sher Vancouver Women's Coordinator and Graphic Designer by profession, designed the Sher Vancouver logo which is the head of a lion in pink.
September 26, 2008 / Sher Vancouver launched its Facebook Group. It was called Sher Vancouver! Gay Punjabi Network. |
September 18, 2008 / Amar Sangha profiled in the Georgia Straight Newspaper "Best of Vancouver" issue as one of eight "Bright lights who challenge the status quo in the city."
August 20, 2008 / Sher Vancouver was a community partner to sponsor the world premiere of the film "Rex vs.Singh" at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. The film was about homophobia and discimination against early Sikh settlers in British Columbia.
August 11, 2008 / Sher Vancouver members democratically vote online to change Sher Vancouver from a Sikh group to a Punjabi group largely due to the growing diversity of the membership.
August 3, 2008 / Sher Vancouver made history as the first Sikh float to ever participate in the Vancouver Pride Parade with its "Pride of Bollywood" entry.
July 13, 2008 / Sher Vancouver participated in the Surrey Pride "Pride in the Park" for the first time in Surrey, B.C.
June 2008 / Amar Sangha was on the cover of the Asian Outlook Magazine. The cover stated: "Sher Vancouver: A Daring Move."
May 3, 2008 / Sher Vancouver held its first social event. A dinner at the Desi Junction Indian Restaurant in North Delta. Ten people showed up to the event when our membership was only at 37 people, some of which did not live locally.
April 27, 2008 / Amar Sangha and his mother were profiled in the Sunday edition of the Surrey Leader Newspaper. The article was titled: "Gay Sikhs: You're not alone."

The Georgia Straight is the first media outlet to interview Sher Vancouver on the establishement of its group. The article was entitled "Sikhs form Queer Support Group."
April 6, 2008 / Amar Sangha, a social worker from Greater Vancouver, founded Sher Vancouver as an online Yahoo Group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and intersex Sikhs and their friends, families and allies.
