OUTREACH / DOSTI
UPCOMING EVENTS

Sher Vancouver is pleased to launch the "DOSTI" project.  DOSTI means "friendship" in many South Asian languages. The purpose of the DOSTI project is to combat homophobia and discrimination in high schools, colleges, universities, and the community throughout Greater Vancouver.

Sher hopes to reduce hatred and build more friendships through increased acceptance and understanding.  Sher feels education and information can play a valuable role to facilitate this.

Outreach workshops designed by or with feedback from Community Developer Romi Chandra, James Chamberlain of the B.C. Teachers' Federation, and Steve Mulligan of the Vancouver School Board will be presented.

Sher Vancouver would like to also thank Lydia Luk and Ryan Clayton of Gab Youth Services at the Centre in Vancouver for allowing Amar Sangha (the Founder of Sher) to share his coming out story at his old high school in Surrey and for providing some workshop training.

The Sher workshops are designed to be culturally sensitive but their message cuts across all boundaries and backgrounds.  Anyone can be a victim of homophobia and discrimination!

Sher is a social and support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered (LGBT), and intersex Punjabi and South Asian people.  Friends, families, and allies are also welcome!  Sher is affiliated with the Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society which is based in Surrey.  Sher Vancouver has over 220 members on its Facebook and Yahoo groups.

The DOSTI project is funded by the CORSA (South Asian) Foundation, the Gay and Lesbian Educators of B.C., and the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General (Victim Services and Crime Prevention Division) and the BC Teachers' Federation

Presentations are FREE so please email Ash Brar at ash_cuxy12@hotmail.com or Parveen Khtaria at parveenkhtaria@hotmail.com to book a presentation before all the slots fill up.
